A LONG-SERVING borough leader is facing a post-election challenge to his job. Hyndburn Council’s Labour group boss Cllr Miles Parkinson is to face an election when it holds its annual meeting on Monday night. He is facing a challenge from Clayton-le-Moors ward s Cllr Melissa Fisher. His deputy Cllr Paul Cox is also to face an election with Rishton s Cllr Kate Walsh as his rival. The contest follows Labour losing a net four wards to the Conservatives in Thursday s borough elections - losing five an gaining Barnfield. Cllr Fisher said: Hyndburn Council has never had a female leader. We feel a female leadership and fresh approach would be positive for the borough and its residents.

Cllr Miles Parkinson, John Brindle, and Lyndsey Sims at Claytpn Civic Hall A BOXING club is to move into a civic hall thanks to a Sport England grant. The £50,000 from its Community Asset Fund will allow Clayton Amateur Boxing Club to transform Clayton Civic Hall into an up-to-date new sporting centre. John Brindle, its head coach, said: “We are a not-for-profit organisation, run entirely by volunteers. This £50,000 funding award is vital so we can meet growing demand and continue to help young people in our local community. Our relocation to Clayton Civic Hall means we can not only help more people, we can also expand what we do including encouraging more females to get involved with our programmes.
