Efforts to deal with a trio of “prolific beggars” in Norton are continuing after worries from village businesses and “daunted” residents.
EFFORTS to deal with a trio of “prolific beggars” in Norton are continuing after worries from village businesses and “daunted” residents. Stockton town centre tends to be a hotspot for begging – and council figures show there was a 27 per cent drop in cases in 2020 compared with the previous year. But concerns about “rough sleepers” and beggars appearing in leafy Norton were raised at a meeting on Wednesday. Cllr Steve Nelson told the Norton Community Partnership there were no known rough sleepers in the borough at the moment on the back of talks with officers. He revealed help was “offered and accepted” in one case in Norton village – and he told the panel “action was being taken” when it came to begging.
