A ROW has broken out between an MP and a borough council about the amount of housing that is being built.
Eastleigh MP Paul Holmes says housing figures show that in the last three years, more than 1,000 extra houses have been built in Eastleigh compared with the government’s target. Using data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Eastleigh’s Calculation of Five-Year Housing Land Supply, figures show that 3,278 houses have been built in the last three years, compared with an assessed need of 2,082. The MP has now slammed the council for the housing, claiming that the council is “plonking houses down” without the necessary infrastructure in place.

THE creation of two new parish councils in a Hampshire town has been approved. This comes after a survey by Eastleigh Borough Council over the last two months as part of a community governance review. The survey asked homeowners for their thoughts on creating a parish council for the unparished Eastleigh town centre area. The results showed that householders are in favour of the move, which is aimed at creating “more locally focused decision making”. Councillors approved the creation of the two new Parish councils at an administration committee meeting on Monday, after the subject was debated at a meeting of the Eastleigh Local Area Committee last week.
From February 6 to March 7 Southampton Airport will open only Monday to Friday. The news comes as airport bosses said the number of passengers dropped following the collapse of Flybe and the pandemic. Steve Szalay, the airport’s operations director, said the decision “demonstrates the extremely difficult conditions we are currently operating in”. But county leaders have called on local communities to support the airport. It comes as a public consultation over plans to expand the runway by 164m was launched at the end of last week. As reported, airport bosses previously said the future of the airport will be hanging in the balance if the plans are rejected.
