MORE than 40,000 people should have been vaccinated in Leeds by this weekend as part of a massive effort to protect the city s population from Covid-19. Leeds City Council is working closely with health partners on a major rollout of vaccinations in a bid to get the city back on its feet as soon as possible and it is anticipated that more than 40,000 jabs will have been given by this weekend. City Council Leader, Cllr Judith Blake, said: The hugely encouraging news that vaccines are being rolled out across the UK means we now all have reason to feel more optimistic about what the future holds than we have for quite some time.

Primary schools across the country are announcing today that they will remain closed despite being expected to reopen tomorrow (Monday, January 4) following the Christmas break.
In a bid to reduce the spread of Covid-19, teaching unions have been urging schools to close for the next two weeks and introduce remote learning.
But Boris Johnson said this morning that parents should send primary-age children back to schools that are open this week. The Prime Minister added that he has “no doubt” that classrooms are safe and that the risk to young people was “very, very small”.

Two-thirds of COVID-19 school costs not met by Government
Local authority leaders have called on the Government to ensure that schools are able to pay the costs of the pandemic as report shows that current funding levels fall short.
A report by the Education Policy Institute (EPI) has found that two-thirds of COVID-19 school costs are currently not met by Government support.
The research finds that virtually all schools have had to spend more this year in order to operate in a ‘Covid-safe’ environment, with half of schools having to use their reserves and half unlikely to balance their budget by the end of the year.
