Significant increase in roads funding welcome

National roads throughout County Cork are to benefit from a massive injection of funding during 2021 - but the allocation of almost €87m will still be insufficient to bring some major routes up to roadworthy condition. Councillors attending Monday s online meeting of Cork County Council on Monday were told by Roads Director Pádraig Barrett of a 42-per-cent increase in the funding allocated by Transport Infrastructure Ireland. While the major schemes category was allocated a total of €73.4m, €69m of this is ringfenced for the Baile Mhúirne/Macroom N22 bypasses. Among the other schemes to benefit from this allocation are the Mallow Relief Road, which received €800k; the M28 Cork To Ringaskiddy route; the Castlemartyr bypass (€100,000); Carrigtwohill to Midleton; and the Dunkettle Interchange.
