A spate of attacks on speed signs in mid Cork by unknown raiders has left them without their batteries and could lead to lost lives due to excessive speed through local villages.
The raids are taking place as the provision of speed signs for a number of villages in the area was confirmed at last Friday s (22nd) meeting of Macroom Millstreet Municipal District Council.
According to Councillor Michael Looney, the raiders are targeting the signs to steal the batteries to use them as they go hunting for rabbits: I used to think they were being sold but now I believe they re being used for lamping as they re ideal for that purpose as they re slow-release batteries.
