The latest incident took place on Elton Road and Belthorn Road in Belthorn at the weekend. The area has been a magnet for fly-tippers for years but now people are calling for permanent action. Cllr Glen Harrison, who represents the St Oswalds ward, said: There is a constant stream of fly tipping meaning we need to find a long term solution. Fly tippers could not care less about the environment and the threat of fines. To tip rubbish blatantly right in front of a sign telling them about prosecutions shows how brazen these people are. I sincerely hope that they are caught and dealt with in the harshest possible way.
Developer Auchshire Homes Limited wish to name the road Bowdler Close. The short street of five homes is part of a a new-build residential development on the site of the former Eagle Chemical works located off Nook Lane and New Lane in Oswaldtwistle. A report to Hyndburn Council s Cabinet Street Naming Committee on Wednesday says: The name proposed is connected to the history of the location of the development site. The development site located at the former Eagle Chemical works. The developer wishes to suggest a new street name for the road accessed from the development - Bowdler Close. The naming suggestion is linked to the history of the site and the name Bowdler was the name of one of the owners of Eagle Chemical works that occupied the site.
The Cabinet minister introduced the rise on March 20 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. But the government plans to scrap it in April. Now Hyndburn s Full Council meeting has passed a motion instructing chief executive David Welsby to write to Mr Sunak and Prime Minister Boris Johnson demanding that the £20 increase to Universal Credit is made permanent and extended to claimants on legacy benefits . It added: We resolve to work with other local government organisations to form a coalition to pressure the Government to make the £20 increase to Universal Credit permanent. Proposing the motion Labour s St Oswald s ward Cllr Glen Harrison said: The £20 a week boost reflected the reality that the level of benefits were not adequate to protect the swiftly increasing number of households relying on them as the crisis hit.
Hyndburn councillors passed a motion at Thursday s full Council meeting on the issue. Proposer St Oswald’s ward’s Cllr Glen Harrison said: Presently the system employed by Conservative controlled Lancashire County Council is simply not efficient and a waste of taxpayers’ money. The Labour representative s motion was passed without Conservative votes against and now chief executive David Welsby will write to to write to the Highways Department at Lancashire County Council, requesting that a full and urgent review is undertaken regards the state of Lancashire’s gullies and review the effectiveness of their interventions when clearing drains . Cllr Harrison highlighted the state of Lottice Lane between the Britannia Inn on Haslingden Old Road in Oswaldtwistle and the King Edward Pub at Guide as an example of the problems when he proposed the move.
