Brent Council rejects Tory and Lib Dem budget plans 2021/22

Brent Civic Centre (Photo: Google Maps) Opposition councillors’ proposals to reduce council tax in Brent were rejected on the basis it would “put a strain” on future finances. Labour-run Brent Council voted against separate budget suggestions put forward by Conservatives and Liberal Democrats at a full council meeting yesterday (Monday, February 22). These included a reduction in the council tax increase from 4.99 per cent to 2.99 per cent and stopping short of introducing a London Living Wage (LLW) to all council employees and contractors. Cllr Suresh Kansagra (Con, Kenton), the leader of the Conservative Group in Brent, said it was unfair to expect residents to face another year of a maximum council tax increase.

Complaint over councillors lockdown photo opp rejected

Brent Civic Centre - Credit: Nathalie Raffray A complaint accusing three Brent councillors of breaching the code of conduct by attending a foodbank has been rejected, with a report concluding the visit was to lend support  rather than being a political stunt.  GLA election candidate and Dudden Hill representative Cllr Krupesh Hirani, Brent Council leader Cllr Muhammed Butt, Alperton representative Cllr Trupti Sangani and Harrow councillor Ajay Maru attended a surplus food market at Alperton Baptist Church, organised by Sewa Day, on January 9. It’s tough out there for people and Covid-19 has exposed food poverty but proud to see organisations and people coming forward to help. @KitchenLondons have set up a new surplus food market at Alperton Baptist Church on Ealing Road @MAsgharButt2@AjayHMaru@SanganiTruptipic.twitter.com/pXhfoZ9NSE Cllr Krupesh Hirani for Brent and Harrow (@KrupeshHirani) January 12, 2021

Alperton councillor criticises Brent Council leader s behaviour

Cllr Anton Georgiou and Cllr Muhammed Butt (Photo: Newsquest/Brent Council) A Brent councillor has called for an investigation into his council leader’s behaviour after receiving an “unacceptable” response to his queries about the upcoming budget. Liberal Democrat councillor Anton Georgiou, who represents Alperton ward, wrote to Brent Council chief executive Carolyn Downs urging her to review the exchange he had with Cllr Muhammed Butt over the council’s finances. He argued the response he received could be seen to have broken the councillors’ code of conduct in relation to their ‘general obligations’ and could lead to a formal investigation by the monitoring officer.

Brent Cllr Georgiou calls for more distancing when shopping

Anton Georgiou, Brent s only Liberal Democrat councillor who represents Alperton ward, was dismayed by the lack of social distancing in Asda s Wembley branch when he went as a customer on December 23. He contacted Asda to enquire about its social distancing enforcement policies amid the coronavirus pandemic, for rules such as mask wearing, the number of customers allowed inside at any one time and the maintence of a two-metre distance in queues and at the checkout.
