LETTER: Try living near a homeless hostel for a year… | Somerset County Gazette

THANK you for your article highlighting Trull residents’ concerns over the future of housing homeless people at Canonsgrove on a permanent basis.

Opposition to Canonsgrove being used as long-term homeless hostel

PEOPLE leaving near a temporary homeless hostel during the Covid-19 crisis fear it could become a permanent refuge. They have voiced concerns to Somerset West and Taunton Council, which is considering whether Canonsgrove could become a permanent hostel. Trull Residents’ Group has recorded several incidents they say make the site inappropriate, including verbal abuse, trespassing, drugs, drunkenness, urinating in public, shouting at 3am, flouting Covid-19 measures, littering and obstructing the road. A statement from TRG says members have supported Canonsgrove’s use as “temporary emergency accommodation for homeless people” during the pandemic. It adds: “Despite strong evidence that the Canonsgrove model is not the best way of helping people out of homelessness, and the resulting crime/anti-social behaviour in the villages, SWT is now exploring expanding Canonsgrove as a sizeable permanent hub for homeless people across the district.

Council approves funding for Woolaway homes project in Taunton

This is estimated to be completed by November 2027. A total of 227 new homes will be delivered, all at affordable rents. SWT have said the funding will ensure a “smooth transition between phases” and “quicken the pace” of the project. Executive member for housing, Cllr Fran Smith, said: “The approval of these recommendations will assist the next phases of the project. “It will provide certainty and security to the North Taunton Woolaway Project tenants. “Not only is this a significant step toward zero carbon using renewable heat and power, but it forms an essential part of our commitment in offering a choice of good quality housing for our residents.
