Cowes Floating Bridge suspended for repairs following split weld (updated)
The bridge is expected to be out of action for several hours
A split weld has been identified this morning on the north east ram. Engineers have been instructed to replace the ram.
The work is expected to take place this morning and the service has been suspended from 10am.
Avoiding a longer period out of action
The work is being undertaken asap to avoid the weld deteriorating further over the weekend, which would run the risk of suspending the service for a much longer period of time.
The Jenny Lee is in operation for foot passengers.
THE Isle of Wight Council is to develop a litter and fly tipping action plan to tackle the growing problem of fly-tipping on the Island. The new approach includes a proposal for a task and finish group with cross party representation of councillors. The aim is to develop a strategy and a two-year rolling plan to crackdown on fly-tip and littering and increase enforcement action against culprits. On Sunday, Cllr Cameron Palin lamented fly tipping in East Cowes after spotting rubbish dumped at three separate locations. Cllr Steve Hastings, cabinet member for heritage, waste and environment, said: “There is absolutely no excuse for fly-tipping and littering it is illegal and seriously detrimental to the environment.

But the other half of Saunders Way is not in council ownership nor control - and will therefore not be serviced.
Concerns were raised over high levels of fly-tipping on the road over the weekend.
While out on a walk, East Cowes Town Councillor, Cllr Cameron Palin, said he saw a bed frame, TV, clothes and a rug all dumped.
