Letter: Residents step into action to clear town of weeds

FURTHER to the excellent feature about David Baxter and his concerns about the state of the ginnels and snickets in Skipton (Skipton s jungle of weeds, online, July 29) it was a pleasure to have him join the Skipton Step Into Action (SSIA) Tuesday Litter Pick and between us we tackled two of them. We removed all the weeds by hand, we used no weed killer or chemicals to clear them. Entirely leg and spade work.  Watch this space for tackling some more, plus anyone is welcome to join the Skipton Step Into Action Tuesday litter pickers who meet up at Morrisons Supermarket car park at 6.30 pm each week.

Government accused of interfering over its plans to end online council meetings

During the coronavirus pandemic, local authorities have been allowed emergency legislation to hold meetings virtually online. That legislation is due to come to an end on May 7, and unless a legal challenge to extend the regulations is successful, councils will have to return to face to face meetings. At this week’s full meeting of Craven District Council, members were told while it waited for the outcome of the legal proceedings, it was sensible to make arrangements for a return to physical meetings. Council leader, Cllr Richard Foster said whereas some could be held in the council chamber in Belle Vue Square, it would be necessary to seek larger premises for meetings where more members were expected to attend to ensure Covid safe social distancing. If the legal challenge was successful however, virtual meetings could continue for the time being, he said.

CCTV in Craven taxis on hold for now but re-visited in six months

Reprieve for Craven taxis TAXI drivers have been given a reprieve over the compulsory fitting of CCTV cameras. Private hire vehicles and taxis in Craven were expected to pay around £500 to have safety cameras fitted by April, for the protection of both drivers and passengers. But, councillors have now decided to shelve the plans until September when they will revisit the new policy and make a fresh decision based on whether the economy is starting to recover. At Tuesday’s meeting of Craven District Council’s Licensing Committee, John Pickering of the Craven Taxi Association said drivers had been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and asked for the compulsory fitting of CCTV to be delayed for two years.
