Precious Monye is among that generation of Nigerian footballers that dazzled the world at the Scotland ’89 FIFA U17 World Cup. They were so good that they made Pele of Brazil utter his now time wearied prediction, that if there was any African country worthy of winning the World Cup, that country ought to be Nigeria.
In this chat with Sports Vanguard, Monye recalls his humble beginnings in Aba, his invitation to the U17 camp and how he played for three national teams simultaneously.
Ex-Celtic man and pundit Craig Burley in odd, circular manager row
January 28, 2021
Former Celtic midfielder Craig Burley has been working in the US as a pundit for several years now.
The ex-Scotland international became a pundit for ESPN in 2013, and isn’t always a controversial figure. He is, however, never shy in expressing an opinion.
Born in Cumnock, Burley spent the early portion of his career at Chelsea, before moving to Celtic in 1997. He starred in Wim Jansen’s famous 97-98 squad, as well as under Dr. Jozef Venglos the season after. Over 8 years, he won 46 caps for Scotland, memorably scoring in the 98 World Cup against Norway.
Celtic family mourn passing of Dr. Jozef Venglos

Former Celtic manager Dr. Jozef Venglos has passed away at the age of 84 [Guardian].
The nomadic Slovak manager took charge of the Bhoys for the 98-99 season, following the departure of Wim Jansen. In 1990, he had become the first non-British or Irish coach to manage in the English First Division, with Aston Villa.
Dr. Jo is known by Celtic supporters primarily for two events. Firstly, the signing of Lubo Moravcik, and secondly the famous 5-1 dismantling of Rangers in November 1998 [YouTube]. Although Dr. Jo couldn’t bring trophies to the club during his spell, he is still remembered fondly by the Celtic family.
