president obama naming his new chief of staff, someone very familiar to many folks because of his last name, bill daley, also the former commerce secretary under president clinton. chuck todd is with us, also new york times chicago columnist for the chicago news james warren, who is with us. and we also have with us eric eserklein. what does he bring to the table for this administration? this is a manager and somebody who will be comfortable be a public face. axelrod and gibs are both leaving and bill daley will fill that role as well. the second thing that makes the hiring unique, the president and bill daley are not familiar with each other. they are not really close friends. chicago is a big city. in fact, the daleys for a long
anything good for the country. well, i mean, i think that there are some that will intercept an endorsement by mr. donohue as not a good hire by the president. well, i think that you ve gotu know, that, i would disagree with. look i don t agree with bill dailo a lot of issues but i do respect him. yeah. and i think that that matters a lot. and look, let me just say this, his bill daley worked if are jpmorgan and some big banks that were involved in all of the wall street mess? absolutely he has. but i don t think he was personally responsible for any of the decisions about the mortgages and the credit default swaps and all of those kinds of things. i know him because he has an outside the belt way political career. it is also true that he was bill clinton s secretary of commerce. just don t see this as a recycling of a clinton person. i see this i see bill daley as his own man from outside of the beltway. principally he thinks outside of the belt way guy. it is true that he s
things right with the base. today, he announced his new choice for chief of staff, former clinton commerce secretary bill daley. here s the president. today i am proud to announce the appointment of an experienced public servant, a devoted patriot, my friend, fellow chicagoan, bill daley, to serve as my chief of staff. [ applause ] now, the president is getting a mixed review, mixed response for choosing daley. on my radio show today former speaker of the house nancy pelosi told me, she trusts the president s judgment. my confidence is with the president of the united states. if his confidence is with bill daley, who is a fine person, you know, i know that he s made some statements that some of us have not been happy with, but i really do think that looking at the total picture.
a few americans can boast the breadth of experience that bill brings to this job. he served as a member of president clinton s cabinet, as commerce secretary. he took on several other important duties over the years on behalf of our country. he s led major corporations. he possesses a deep understanding of how jobs are created and how to grow our economy. and needless to say, bill also has a smidgen of awareness of how our system of government and politics works. you might say it is a genetic trait. but most of all, i know bill to be somebody who cares deeply about this country, believes in its promise and considers no calling higher and more important than serving the american people.
trait. but most of all, i know bill to be somebody who cares deeply about this country. believes in its promise and considers no calling higher and more important than serving the american people. will he be a real chief of staff, chuck, first, then howard. will he be able to hire and fire in the white house or will everything have to be approved by the president? i think he s got tor real power. i think there s going to be more of an inside outside game. he s not going to be the guy that s going to be trying to legislate congress. obama 1.0 was about working with congress. 2.0 is about getting this message out to the country without having to deal with congress as much. sort of the challenge that clinton had after republicans took control of the congress. and that s what he s going to be. it s going to be more of an
