To pursue this mission successfully, the medical department was backed up by a farflung network of laboratories stretching from north to south, from east to west. Clinical, Public Health and Research Laboratories were required everywhere. Diseases new to the army doctor were being encountered, new procedures, methods of treatment and control had to be developed and evaluated.
