Photos: Here s What Cleveland Looked Like in 1889

Originally published by H.R. Page and Co. in 1889, Cleveland Illustrated was given to the Michael Schwartz Library of Cleveland State in 2003. The book contained 135 images of early Cleveland. Thankfully, they were saved and preserved and are now a glorious snapshot of what the city looked like before the turn of the century.

20 Vintage Photos of Cleveland s First Aquarium

Before the Greater Cleveland Aquarium opened in the Flats in 2012, there was the Cleveland Aquarium. The latter opened February 6, 1954, and was located in Gordon Park. It closed to the public in June 1985 (due to structural and budget problems), with some exhibits moved to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Vintage Photos: Devo, Tin Huey, and the Music of Akron

In 2015, The Akron Sound Museum opened to celebrate the music from the Akron and Kent areas that was popular in the 1970s and 1980s and has grown to encompass even more. Akron and Kent became known far and wide for their punk, new wave and experimental music scene, highlighted by bands like Devo, Tin Huey and more. What was "The Akron Sound"? As Buzz Clic, of the Rubber City Rebels, once said, "I don't think any of the bands sounded alike but I think the spirit was the same. We were all just sick of being spoon-fed the music of the day and it appeared that the seat assignments were already taken, so when the "punk, new wave" thing came along, well. there was a wide open door and we all just went through it."

Vintage Photos: The Historic Euclid Arcade Through the Years

The Arcade, modeled after Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele in Milan, opened in 1890 and was built at a cost of $867,000. The building is a cross between a light court and a commercial passage or shopping street. When it opened, it was one of the first indoor shopping malls in the United States, consisting of three structures: two 9-story office buildings connected by the four-story iron-and-glass enclosed arcade. The 300-foot-long arcade itself is a covered light court ringed by four levels of balconies. It's been a central part of Cleveland for more than a century, and looks as good as ever.
