After extensively reading about Critical Race Theory (CRT), including Dan Copp’s article and Kathleen Parker’s column in that same issue, it is easy to see why there is so much confusion around CRT. Perhaps then we need to look at CRT not for what so many think it is and is not, but as a lens, a tool, an opportunity.
My undergraduate major in college was history. Having taken nearly 20 courses in that subject area I now lump all of them into what I call traditional history instruction. Traditional history taught me, for example, that Texas fought Mexico for its independence. CRT enlightened me to the fact that because Mexico was heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, which had forbade slavery, Texas also fought Mexico to preserve slavery.
