A long line of cars stretched down Dr. Robert Smith Sr. Parkway in front of Blackburn Middle School Saturday morning, each car steadily moving forward as the day wore on.
Jackson State University students, staff and other volunteers stood in front of an 18-wheeler with a bright, light blue trailer adorned with the Amazon logo smiling across it.
Jackson community members were ushered through the Blackburn Middle School parking lot at 1311 W. Pearl Street starting at 9 a.m. to pick up nonperishable items, cases of water, hand sanitizers and masks. For those with children, volunteers also included books as part of the giveaway. .
Jackson State University and several community partners will be giving away 1,500 free food boxes to the community on Saturday, university officials said Friday.
According to a news release, the university s Center for Community Engagement will host the food box giveaway starting at 9 a.m. at the Blackburn Middle School parking lot, located at 1311 West Pearl Street.
The boxes, which will include non-perishable food items, will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. According to the release, the drive-thru event aims to help families in need.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A man is behind bars after allegedly stealing a fire officialâs car in Jackson.
Division Fire Chief Cleotha Sanders said the car was stolen from Station 6 and belonged to the District One Fire Chief.
Aaron Jones, 25, was captured after being spotted by a Hinds County deputy.
Captain Tyree Jones with the Hinds County Sheriffâs Department said that the suspect tried to flee and crashed on Capitol Street and Ellis Avenue.
