Period poverty in Bracknell and Reading - are schools and supermarkets doing enough?

Although many organisations dealing with young people try to combat this, are they doing enough? Approximately two in five schools in Reading and Bracknell areas take part in a government scheme to provide free period products for students, it was revealed. Department for Education data shows that only 20 of the 49 state-funded schools in Reading and 16 out of the 38 state-funded schools in Bracknell ordered free period products for their pupils between the start of the scheme in January 2020 and the end of last year. The Red Box Project, which campaigned for the scheme to be introduced, said all schools should be taking part to support the one in 10 young people experiencing period poverty.

Half of Oxfordshire schoolgirls left without period products

The Government is now encouraging all institutions eligible to apply to access free period products. This follows the extension of the existing scheme, which will continue at least throughout this year. Before the Government announced the nationwide scheme, the Red Box Project – a charity that works to provide period products to young women all across the country – helped more than 70 schools in Oxfordshire. Jess and Nancy Whitehead started the FemCura group to allow young girls and women to obtain free period products Co-founder of the charity Clegg Bamber commented after the figures were released last week: At the Red Box Project we supported more than 70 schools and colleges across Oxfordshire ensuring that no young person misses out on their education due to having their period.
