The Hudson River sloop Clearwater’s first captain, Allan J. Aunapu, died in an accident last Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at age 79, according to a news release from the Clearwater nonprofit organization.
An accomplished musician in addition to being an expert sailor, Aunapu skippered the Clearwater on its maiden voyage in 1969.
The first crew was made up largely of musicians, including Pete Seeger, Don McLean and first mate Gordon Bok. They sailed from Maine down the coast to New York Harbor stopping along the way to give fundraising concerts.
Rita Houston
Houston served as program director and on-air personality at the New York City public radio station for over 25 years.
Rita Houston, longtime program director and DJ at Fordham University’s public radio station WFUV, died on Tuesday (Dec. 15) after a six-year battle with cancer. She was 59.
“It is with great sadness that we at WFUV share news that we have lost Rita Houston, our much-loved program director and iconic DJ to generations of listeners listeners who regarded her as their radio friend,” said WFUV general manager
Chuck Singleton in a statement posted to the station’s website. “Rita left this world this morning, December 15, 2020, in the loving company of her wife and our colleague, Laura Fedele, and her family.”
