This issue brief presents the case as to why Canada’s urban ecosystems should be the focus of strategic green infrastructure investments. Current research shows healthy urban ecosystems and the services they provide are instrumental to the long-term well-being and cultural survival of our communities1. Global population projections show an estimated increase from now 7.8 to 11.2 billion people by the year 2050. As populations continue to grow, with most people now settling in cities, urban ecosystems are under significant threats to excessive overuse and degradation due to competing land uses such as affordable housing and urban sprawl.
