In his first ‘State of the Community’ address, he says the community is strong. An excited Mayor Miller addressed the crowd at Luther Williams field Thursday. He spoke about many of the accomplishments his administration has already made, from the Brookdale Warming Center to the Clean Streets Matter initiative. He says those accomplishments are the result of teamwork. “Together I am confident this team will meet the challenges because we have proven that we live by the Golden Rule treating our neighbors as we want to be treated,” Miller said.

Downtown Macon merchants and business owners heard an impromptu progress report Tuesday on Mayor Lester Miller’s first 30 days in office. Miller, who at the end of last year succeeded the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, attended the monthly meeting of the Downtown Macon Community Association on Zoom. The local attorney, businessman and former school board president said he “hit the ground running” to help people experiencing homelessness after two people died of hypothermia on Christmas, days before he took office.

He says his administration’s work is far from over. Within a few days of taking office, his administration opened the Brookdale Warming Center. It came after two homeless men froze to death on Christmas night. The center started with just three people on the first day, to about ten people staying the first weekend. “Now we have over 100 people that we’re able to have 24/7, they get fed three times a day, have a warm place to stay and now we’re starting with some counseling service and case managers are there taking care of their needs,” said Miller.
