As this harrowing year comes to a close, which included a record-breaking wildfire season in Washington that burned over 700,000 acres, Governor Inslee unveiled on Tuesday a comprehensive legislative framework for the upcoming session, which focuses on securing reductions in climate pollution consistent with the state’s science-based reduction targets. The federal government has outlined new rules for its Clean Fuels Standard (CFS). The CFS seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by curtailing the amount of carbon in fuels that is burned for powering cars and heating homes. The CFS is an integral element of the government’s strategy to meet its Paris climate agreement commitments.
These rules include a requirement for Canadian producers and distributors to reduce their carbon emissions by 2.6 per cent by 2022 and by 13 per cent by 2030.
“As the world moves to a cleaner economy, countries and businesses around the world are making a major shift to cleaner and non-emitting fuels,” Environment Canada spokesperson Moira Kelly said in an email to Canadian Press.
