Jil McIntosh: Today we’re going to talk about a very nasty, four-letter swear word: R-u-s-t. Vehicle rust is both unsightly and potentially dangerous, because if you’ve got rusty body panels, it’s possible your vehicle’s frame and steering components are at risk, too.

Driving.ca contributors’ fleets: my 1995 Dodge Ram pickup; and Clayton Seams’ 1999 Chevrolet Suburban. I learned preventative maintenance with my truck, while Clayton had to learn rust repair. We’re going to explain the why and how-to of both.
Both have been with us since new. I bought mine in Toronto in late 1994. Within two weeks it was rustproofed with oil spray, and has been resprayed every year since then.
