The Railroad Commission of Texas highlighted the agency’s extensive work and expertise in plugging orphaned oil and gas wells during a visit from U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland in Houston last week.
The plugging work at the Houston orphaned well will ensure that no hydrocarbons can leak from the well and pollute groundwater in the area. There has been no evidence of prior pollution.
Texas became the first state in the nation to begin plugging abandoned oil and gas wells using federal grants from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
