Western New Mexico University adds four inductees to Ed Hall of Fame

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Four outstanding educators were selected to be included in the Western New Mexico University School of Education Hall of Fame and inducted during a virtual ceremony this spring. The 2020-2021 WNMU School of Education Hall of Fame inductees are Monica Ortiz Baca, Cindy Murphy Lee, Leland D. Miller and Mr. Darwin K. Bleak. Baca is a three-time graduate of WNMU. She earned a bachelor’s in elementary education in 1983, a master’s in counseling in 1996, and a master’s in interdisciplinary studies in 1998. WNMU recognized Baca for her 38 years of dedication to teaching elementary and special education and for service to her community of Chandler, Arizona, where she both lives and teachers. Her nomination read, “Mrs. Baca provides a safe and supportive place for her students, a place of refuge from the storms of life.”

Sperreng Middle School teacher Adam Taylor has been selected to receive a 2021 Key to the Classroom Award from Special School District, honoring his achievements and dedication for service to students. Taylor was nominated for the award by several parents of students in his class.  The Key to the Classroom Award honors SSD’s top teachers throughout the St. Louis County district. Among the more than 2,700 teachers in the district, just 10 are selected for the prestigious honor. All Key to the Classroom Award winners are also considered for the 2021 SSD Teacher of the Year award.  Taylor is a special education teacher for the Personalized Academic and Life Skills program (PALS). He has been serving Lindbergh Schools for eight years, first as a paraprofessional and for the past five years as a teacher.

The winner of the Innovation in the Classroom Award will be honored with a choice of prizes including registration and travel to the NASRO National School Safety Conference in Orlando in July or registration and travel to one of several for-credit training programs run by NASRO throughout the year.  The winner will also be invited to present the winning program to the participants of the NASRO National School Safety Conference and will also be featured in the summer issue of The Journal of School S
