Often, celebrations of black classical music focus on performers: great interpreters such as Marion Anderson, Paul Robeson, Kathleen Battle; or even more likely, artists who live in multiple musical worlds such as jazz and classical master Wynton Marsalis, pop and classical star Bobby McFerrin, and the hip hop and classical duo Black Violin. But we wanted to point out that black classical musicians have been composing substantial music for centuries. And so this February we are shining the spotlight on a score… one every weekday… of great composers with roots in Africa.We’ll meet Le Mozart Noir… the man who not only was a world-famous swordsman, but an acknowledged master of the violin bow and the composing quill, playing duets with Queen Marie Antoinette. We’ll visit a city of Creole musical dynasties, when New Orleans was home to the finest orchestras in the new world.
