Often, celebrations of black classical music focus on performers: great interpreters such as Marion Anderson, Paul Robeson, Kathleen Battle; or even more likely, artists who live in multiple musical worlds such as jazz and classical master Wynton Marsalis, pop and classical star Bobby McFerrin, and the hip hop and classical duo Black Violin. But we wanted to point out that black classical musicians have been composing substantial music for centuries.
