Holyrood elections: A look at Glasgow Cathcart and its candidates ONLY Nicola Sturgeon won a Glasgow seat at Holyrood with a larger majority than James Dornan five years ago. The SNP candidate picked up 9390 more votes than his nearest rival – Labour’s Soryia Siddique – as his party took all eight city constituencies. He announced plans to step down last year but reversed his decision in July, and will now seek to add to his ten years in the role. Aiming to replace him are Craig Carson, Euan Blockley and Joe McCauley. Carson, a primary school teacher, is Labour’s hope in Cathcart as the party tries to take back seats in the city.
Hostelling is celebrating its 90th birthday HIKERS and young people exploring Scotland often ended up spending the night in a police cell in Glasgow in the 30s and 40s – but it was all entirely innocent. The city’s first youth hostel was created in the old Cathcart Police Station and Barracks on Clarkston Road in 1938. For the princely sum of ‘one and thruppence’ (one shilling and three old pennies) hostellers could sleep in a room which would once have housed far less savoury characters. Early hostellers, c 1932 Pic: Hostelling Scotland In his book ‘An illustrated history of SYHA’s Youth Hostels 1931-2011’ volunteer archivist John Martin explains that agreement had been reached between Glasgow Corporation and the SYHA as early as September 1937 for the plan to turn the old police station into a youth hostel.

The well-loved coffee company, which supplies many independent cafes throughout the city, is currently based in Castlemilk, but will add their first own coffee shop in Cathcart in the coming spring. The newest location will be found on Clarkston Road, near to Cathcart train station. Ovenbird Coffee Roasters have previously teased the new opening in a post on social media, with a picture of work renovating the site, along with the caption Our new home is coming up nicely .
