Clarkson Research reported on March 10 that orders for 92 new ships equivalent to 2.82 million CGT were placed worldwide last month and South Korean shipbuilders won those for 43 ships adding up to 1.56 million CGT.
“The orders include seven very large crude carriers and five A-Max tankers, all of which went to them,” it said, adding, “When it comes to large container carriers of 12,000 TEU or more, they won 13 out of 17.” Chinese and Japanese shipbuilders followed them with 1.12 million CGT and 60,000 CGT, respectively.

S. Korean shipbuilders top January order book, taking up half of global orders
South Korean shipbuilders topped order book ranking in January, with orders surging by 13 times versus barren month of a year ago.
According to British shipbuilding and marine industry tracker Clarkson Research Services on Tuesday, Korean shipbuilders won orders of 910,000 compensated gross tonnage (CGT) or 20 vessels in January to account for 54 percent of the global total of 1.7 million CGTs or 66 vessels.
The feat is a stark difference from a year ago when Korea drew a mere 70,000 CGTs (2 vessels). China followed with orders of 510,000 CGTs (32 vessels) and Japan with 260,000 CGTs (12 vessels).
S. Korea: Shipbuilders see rally as orders swell at year-end
Korean shipbuilders have secured a series of lucrative orders for LNG carriers and other vessels this week, casting a rosy outlook on their efforts to meet annual targets.
Korea’s top three shipbuilders ― Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) ― said they have clinched orders worth nearly 5 trillion won ($4.53 billion) in just three days from Monday to Wednesday.
During the period, KSOE, which is the holding firm of Hyundai Heavy Industries and other shipbuilding affiliates, won orders for 13 vessels ― four container vessels and nine LNG carriers ― with a combined worth reaching 2.27 trillion won. The orders were mostly from shippers in Panama.
