Attorneys representing California inmates are pleading with state and federal officials to give priority to prisoners so they can get the COVID-19 vaccines soon. They’re asking Governor Gavin Newsom and U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar to order the swift vaccinations of every inmate who hasn’t been infected, starting with those most vulnerable. Attorneys say it would help ease the stress on overwhelmed hospitals, while helping control outbreaks inside prisons and jails. J. Clarke Kelso, the federal court-appointed receiver who controls the prison medical system, says roughly 42,000 inmates need to be vaccinated, which could take four weeks.
