Monroe County Museum seeking community votes on digitization project

The goal is to digitize the 1920 through 1923 editions of Monroe s newspaper. Andrew Clark, director of the museum, said in the announcement, these papers were selected because of condition . and because the 1920s were a significant era in the city and county s development. The contest is through the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University; and the Monroe County Museum is one of four finalists. The other finalists for this year s CMU effort are Beaver Island, Belleville and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saginaw. Those years of The Monroe Evening News were archived years ago on microfilm, and existing microfilm is one of the requirements to enter this contest. But the existing microfilms need to be viewed and read in person, such as on the reference room machines at Ellis Library and Reference Center. Community Advisory Group Announces Hall of Fame Inductees

Three local men are recipients of this year’s CAG Hall of Fame Awards. Bernie Bessert, Norm Keon and Ed Lorenz were voted into the Hall of Fame by the members of the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force, an EPA recognized Community Advisory Group (CAG). All three were involved with the formation of the CAG at its beginning in December, 1997. In previous years, the award ceremony took place at the annual Christmas Potluck, but with Covid 19 restrictions in place, the plaques were presented separately. Bernie Bessert.
