Gordy family, owners of The Varsity, will demolish Athens restaurant

Owners of The Varsity have applied to tear down the iconic Athens restaurant, which one commissioner said has been a long time coming. The current building at 1000 West Broad St. has stood since 1965, though The Varsity has been established in Athens since 1932, just four years after the original Atlanta location opened. Athens-Clarke Commissioner Melissa Link said a series of events over the past several years pointed to the eventual demolition of the restaurant, owned by the Gordy family. “This has been a project that s been a long time coming . we ve known the inevitability of the demise of The Varsity,” said Link, whose district includes the restaurant.
