Citing the “enormous financial impacts” of contracting police services with either Windsor or Chatham-Kent, an administration report urges Leamington council to return to the OPP service it voted last year to terminate.
Having Windsor Police Service take over from the Ontario Provincial Police would cost the municipality as much as 54 per cent more in the first year, and force either taxes to rise 13 per cent or major cuts to other municipal services, says the report going to a special meeting of council Tuesday. It recommends not approving either of the bids made by Windsor (the preferred bid) and Chatham-Kent Police Service and going back on an interim basis to the OPP after the Leamington/OPP contract terminates on June 9.
