Mental health issues are the root of gun violence in America, according to many Utahns. However, others believe the lack of gun control is the cause of mass shootings.
As the U.S. continues to reel from the mass school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Salt Lake City Police Department held a gun buyback event on Saturday. City residents lined up to give their unwanted guns in exchange for a $50 or $100 gift card to Maverik or Walmart. Nearby, the pro-gun group Utah 2A Alliance offered more money to buy the guns while also hoping to educate them about firearm ownership.
Salt Lake City offered gift cards for unwanted guns in an effort to take guns off the streets with a buyback program, while others tried to keep the guns on the street but in safe hands.
