A proposal to deregister part of the common land along the A505 Baldock Road and exchange it with land west of Pen Hills has been approved.
Since then, the heath has been 8500m² smaller than it should have been.

The discovery happened when members of the action group opposing the previous land swap application did their research at Hertfordshire Archives.
While checking documents, Royston residents Karen Pearson and Don Shewan uncovered information about the compulsory purchase of a small section of the common for a new dual carriageway on the A505.
Royston s Richard Ketteringham told the Crow: If it is serious enough to use poison, the the car park should be closed. The conservators are not taking it seriously - what concerns me is it s a public health emergency and they are not acting like they ve got a public health emergency. And laying down the poison is a bigger risk to wildlife and dogs. If the conservators and North Herts District Council want to show they are taking it seriously, close the car park and get rid of the waste.
Conservators chair Ms Swarbrick said: The rat infestation is being taken seriously by the conservators. All options were considered before taking action, including closing the car park to cut out food waste and litter.
A rat colony is being exterminated on Therfield Heath

Rat baiting is being carried out to deal with a colony of well over 100 of the rodents around the Therfield Heath car park opposite Royston McDonald s.
The Conservators of Therfield Heath and Greens said they have authorised the placing of rat poison in secure bait boxes which are then placed within the litter bins bases. This has significantly reduced the risk of any human contact with the bait, said the conservators chair Clare Swarbrick. However, we are warning all users – particularly dog walkers – to be alert. Keep young children and dogs close to you and within eyesight to ensure that they do not come into contact with rats/rat remains in this area.
