Launch of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2021 – The Poetry Society

Launch of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2021 The 23rd Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, one of the largest and most prestigious awards for young poets aged 11-17 writing original works in English, opens today for entries from young writers aged 11-17. Run by The Poetry Society, with the generous support of the Foyle Foundation, the competition invites entries from both individual poets and schools anywhere in the world.  All entries are free and poems can be on any theme, and of any length. The deadline is 31 July 2021. This year’s judges are poets Clare Pollard and Yomi Ṣode, who will read the poems submitted and discover the next generation of brilliant poets. To support entrants, they have recorded a video to detail what they’ll be looking for during the judging process alongside judges’ blogs here and here.

Annie Freud on writing and her warring parents: When you re a kid, you re the tool, you re the pawn

Annie Freud at her home in Dorset  “This is my cabinet of curiosities!” says Annie Freud, waving toward a great glass-fronted, Victorian-looking thing, its shelves lined with whatnot. The 72-year-old author and artist is cheerfully chain-smoking as she gives me a video-call tour of the room where she writes her poems. It’s a cluttered study in a rural corner of west Dorset – a land of “wild animals and cataclysmic weather,” says Freud – where she lives with her second husband, David. Freud’s playful poems are themselves cabinets of curiosities. All sorts of curios – a radar station, a Sappho ode, a cucumber green sex toy – are brought to the reader’s attention in much the same way that, at one point in our conversation, she waggles an antique doll in front of the camera. “All dolls are very freaky, but here’s a major freaky doll!” Its dress is tartan, its face the stuff of nightmares.
