This excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr. s I Have Been To The Mountaintop speech has particular resonance today. Delivered to a church packed with workers in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 3, 1968, the speech would prove eerily prophetic. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated the next day. The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land; confusion all around. That s a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. And I see God working in this period of the twentieth century in a way that men, in some strange way, are responding.
to repeat themselves month after month. we can t even count the number of incidents where young black men have lost their lives with no weapon around. and the officers walk away. i think it s in the fact that we are integrated community now. so we have black and white students and universities together. they have become friends and when one hurts, the other one hurts. and i think only through building those type relationships are we going to move forward. clara ester, i know you said it is a difficult day as you think back. it s so important to continue the conversation. thank you again. thank you. our next hour begins after a short break.
