Staff Writer CEDARVILLE, Ohio Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine expressed some tentative optimism during his Thursday update about the state’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. There may be more opportunities for inoculation available, as smaller pharmacies will soon be able to administer vaccines, and looser regulations are being considered for upcoming spring and summer events. Nursing homes and hospitalization rates continue to figure high on DeWine’s list of priorities, with nursing home deaths accounting for a significant portion of fatalities related to the pandemic among Ohio’s vulnerable seniors. However, in December Ohioans 80 and older were 25 percent of COVID hospitalizations; that number is now 18 percent.

Belmont County kids set to Shop with a Deputy Saturday | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer ST. CLAIRSVILLE The COVID-19 pandemic is altering nearly every holiday event, but it has not reduced the community’s generosity. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department will hold its yearly Shop with a Deputy event at the St. Clairsville Walmart. This year’s event will be held in memory of former sheriff Tom McCort, who died in April. He served 20 years as Belmont County’s sheriff, from 1984-2004. Sheriff David Lucas said it is important to go forward with holiday giving. “(W)e didn’t want to not have it this year, because this year we are helping 69 kids in the Ohio Valley,” he said.
