According to Vibe, he will be celebrated for making an impact in his field and in Brooklyn. "It's not an exaggeration to say, I would not have pursued a career in the arts if it were not for the work of Spike Lee," BAM's president, Gina Duncan, said in a statement. "His films opened my eyes at a young age, to the fact that films can be layered and complicated works of art that could be both artistically excellent and accessible." Lee has addressed issues of race, poverty, crime and more in his films, which include School Daze, Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods.
