Special to the Crier
How much of what we throw in the trash could be composted? The answer is: “A lot.”
A group of Weston residents decided to find out just how much. They have been weighing their trash and their compostable kitchen waste.
If you are good at reducing the amount of stuff you accumulate, reducing the amount you throw away, and recycling, you will have a high ratio of compost to total waste (compost plus other solid waste). According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the run-of-the-mine estimate of the ratio is about one quarter. Our Weston composters did much better.
