Closing Broadstairs Christmas Market amid pandemic was in the public interest

The eleventh-hour closure of a Christmas market has been defended by local authority chiefs for being in the public interest amid the pandemic.
Kent County Council s (KCC) scrutiny committee met earlier today to review the controversial decision to shut Broadstairs Market, Thanet, over safety fears last month. The east Kent district was one of the UK Covid hotspots.

Cllr Clair Bell (Con), KCC s cabinet member for public health, told the panel: I think this was the right decision to take and was in the public interest.

More asymptomatic coronavirus testing centres will open in Kent by January 31, it has emerged.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands Kent County Council s (KCC) historic HQ at County Hall, in Sessions House, Maidstone, will be one of 10 new sites created over the next 20 days.

Rapid coronavirus tests, that gives results within a couple of hours, are being provided to people who do not have any symptoms but may, unknowingly, be spreading the virus.
Under this, 450 people in Kent (Not including Medway) were found to be positive with the virus. This represents around 1% of the total number of people tested.
