The newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe said Kara-Murza had written to his lawyer Maria Eismont that the move was punishment for not standing up at the right time, which he said the authorities had deemed a "malicious violation". Kara-Murza said he had been sent to a type of punishment cell known by its Russian initials as an EPKT, the strictest form of isolation from other inmates.
Jailed Russian journalist and opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza has been transferred to a punishment block in a new penal colony in the Russian city of Omsk, independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta reported on Jan. 30, citing his lawyer.
Evgenia Kara-Murza wrote on social media platform X that her husband, who suffers from a nerve disorder after surviving two poison attacks, had been in solitary confinement during the four months he had spent in the harsh-regime IK-6 colony in Omsk. Convicted prisoners can disappear for long periods while being transferred by rail and prison car between far-flung points of Russia's penal system. In December, the family and lawyers of opposition leader lost contact with him for nearly three weeks while he was being moved to a penal colony in the Arctic.
