SPRINGFIELD For the past 35 years the Black American Heritage flag has been raised outside City Hall on the first day of February.
“Rain, snow, sleet or shine we are going to raise the flag,” said state Rep. Bud L. Williams, D-Springfield, who organizes the event with his wife, Gloria Williams. “We have been out here in blizzards, snow storms, 15 below zero, wind storms.”
Monday was no exception, even with the arrival of a nor’easter expected to drop several inches of snow.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s event was limited to a small group of public officials, unlike past years when it has been open to the public. Focus Springfield livestreamed the ceremony on the Springfield Office of Communications Facebook page.
