military convoy that had just been hit, presumably by aerial bombardment. there were firemen there desperately trying to put out the remaining flames. there was smoke everywhere. we saw the body of one ukrainian soldier who appeared to have been killed in that incident. the target, it seems, was a multirocket launcher that was at the head of that small convoy of three vehicles. and i think what that tells you, anderson, is just how difficult it is at this stage for the ukrainians to move some of their more sophisticated weapons around because they don t have air defenses, because the russians now really control the skies. they can take out targets opportunistically when they see them. as we got next to the capital, we then saw a large group of civil defense volunteers. they ve been lining up all over the country trying to help out
in any way that they can. the ones we saw had a big pile of tires with them, anderson, presumably their plan is to set fire to those tires to block off the road, create a smoke screen if russian troops came barreling down that highway. but it also, i think, just highlights what an uneven fight this is. there s definitely a david and goliath element to this, even as we re seeing ukrainian forces fighting so hard to defend this capital of nearly 3 million people, anderson. clarissa, given that you drove westward into kyiv today, are there a lot of road blocks, a lot of checkpoints, a lot of fortifications around kyiv you were able to see? reporter: there s definitely some checkpoints. some of them official, some of them seem to be more like the civil defense volunteers who are coming out. we saw some sort of makeshift road blocks where people have put slabs of concrete at various
