it is the chinese golden timber bamboo. as you can see, it has really large canes. incredible. years ago, we would never have been able to generate size of bamboo like this in sheffield. so this is an example of our warming climate? this would not have thrived to this extent 40, 50 years ago? exactly this is an example of increased summer temperatures on the edge of sheffield which we would have never had 40 years ago. the temperatures have soared as such that we can generate these sorts of canes. let me show you what else we have. it s myjungle! this is my bit ofjungle which i have generated over the last 20 years or so. you can see it now, it is towering at about 25 feet, and i feel that it is my own little bit ofjungle. this is an australasian species,
ever since i have been a child, i was fascinated by small creatures and then plants. the idea that i might be able to go abroad and see those tropical jungles and those animals and plants was a fantastic idea to me. the first time i flew, i was absolutely terrified. it was a terrible experience for me, and so, i was never going to go to see those jungles, those exciting places. so we moved to sheffield in 1987 from cambridge, and i started to try and reproduce, in my own way, what i thought i might be capable of doing, of producing a jungle type atmosphere in sheffield. it was a long open pitch, just grass, a few trees, with nothing else, so it was an ideal blank canvas to try and start that process. incredible, can i have a look? you certainly can. this is my best bamboo.
The efforts of Henry Ford to purchase the government facilities at Muscle Shoals in the 1920s attracted much attention from real estate developers across the nation. They believed that Ford would build manufacturing plants here and create great opportunities for growth. One of those developers was John J. Nyhoff, of Troy, NY, who left a major imprint on the City of Sheffield. He erected substantial commercial buildings and quality subdivisions along Jackson Highway that are still in use today.
Wilson Dam was incomplete and the nitrate plants were standing idle in 1922 when Nyhoff began to invest in local Corner (see photo), an automobile dealership just across the street, a furniture store with 32,000 square feet of floor space, a funeral home, Elks Home & Club House, and the magnificent three-story Washington Terrace Apartments. All are standing today, but a couple of the vacant buildings are badly in need of repairs.
