The money in Lakeland is to establish a multi-component project in partnership with Bonnet Springs Park which focuses on increasing flood storage capacity to the drainage basin by improving the stormwater infrastructure and watershed quality, according to a press release. The awards are part of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program. It allows governments to develop large-scale infrastructure projects to make communities more resilient to future disasters, according to a release.

The program allows local governments to increase the resiliency of critical facilities that serve a public safety purpose for local communities. “While we continue to help communities recover from the impacts of major storms in recent years, we also need to prepare for future storms,” said DeSantis. “This funding will be central to that preparation and make these communities more resilient.”
