Kalamazoo will close temporary warming shelter Sunday as temperatures rise

KALAMAZOO, MI The temporary warming shelter nears the Mills Street homeless encampment will be closed at noon Sunday, Feb. 21.
The warming shelter is not needed as temperatures will not longer meet criteria for extreme weather, according to a news release from the city of Kalamazoo. The shelter will be taken down beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, the release said.
The warming shelter was constructed during the first week of February in response to single-digit temperatures, with wind chills registering below zero. The shelter had the capacity to accommodate 60 people, the release said.

KALAMAZOO, MI The Kalamazoo City Commission will talk about investigating the departure of the city’s former public safety chief, who city officials said “retired” in September. An investigation by MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette later revealed former Chief Karianne Thomas was actually fired.

KALAMAZOO, MI Two Kalamazoo City Commissioners said they only found out that Public Safety Chief Karianne Thomas was fired through an email they received from city administration sent hours before a news article revealed the truth to the public.
Commissioner Chris Praedel said he found out the chief was terminated without cause from an email the city manager’s office sent to members of the Kalamazoo City Commission at 10:29 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15.
