Garfield Lake, wetlands dry up as Novi dewatering project drags on

A dewatering project in Novi meant to help avert a sewer catastrophe has instead created a lake and wetlands disaster.
The dewatering in the area of 9 Mile Road near Garfield Lake began in 2019 in order to facilitate the installation of a free-flowing gravity sewer system to replace force main, pressurized sewers.
“It will mean less of an opportunity for a catastrophic failure to happen,” explained City Engineer Ben Croy explained. “If this pipe gets broken, you just go in and fix it. With a pumped system, which is the force main, it’s a much bigger problem and you could have a big spill.”
