The Houghton family, the founders of Corning Inc., owned the plot when it was an undeveloped piece of farmland. Officials said workers from the then Corning Flint Glass Works and other area glassmaking companies dumped waste glass and ceramics at the site until the early 20th century, when the area was covered with topsoil and homes were built.
Kevin Frazier, a state DEC spokesman, said the cleanup team hired by Corning Inc., Sevenson Environment Services, completed the remediation of 42 properties in 2020.
“They are hoping to do about the same number of properties (in Houghton Plot) this year,” Frazier said. “The DEC expects Corning Inc., to have all the work completed by the end of 2024.”
