Point system could give Newburgh residents edge in buying city property

Times Herald-Record CITY OF NEWBURGH - Known for having a large number of vacant properties and an unusually high rate of renters versus homeowners, Newburgh is trying to flip the script with a system that could make it easer for residents to buy city property. Explaining this idea, City Councilman-at-Large Anthony Grice described categories of prospective buyers that would be given special consideration: residents, minorities, buyers planning to live in a building where a business would be located, and proven victims of urban renewal. Buyers also have to meet the city s standard eligibility requirements. People in these groups can collect points that would translate into a dollar amount or a percentage bonus on top of an offer they would make to purchase a property,  Planning and Development Director Ali Church explained. She presented ideas for this initiative during the City Council s Dec. 10 work session.

Ed Brezinski elected Erie City Council president over Liz Allen for 2021

Ed Brzezinski will lead Erie City Council in 2021. Brzezinski s election as council president, however, brought both tension and debate to the seven-member panel s first meeting of the new year.  Council members chose Brzezinski by a 4-3 vote at the panel s regular meeting on Wednesday morning. Brzezinski, 74, spent four years on City Council from 1988 to 1992, followed by 12 years on the Erie School Board from 2006 to 2018. A retired educator, Brzezinski won his current four-year term on City Council in 2019.  Brzezinski told colleagues on Wednesday that he would like to meet with individual council members next week to discuss their goals for 2021 and the various issues facing the city, including finances.
