OCONTO - A contract to rebuild a portion of Splinter Causeway at Oconto’s harbor was approved by the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday.
The roadway and base from the launch to the jetty, roughly half of the 2,800 foot long causeway, will be reconstructed to repair damage caused by erosion, said City Administrator Sara Perrizo.
The work will start as soon as permits are approved by the state. Perrizo said she did not have a timeline for when the work would start or how long it would take.
Erosion caused by high water levels and storms resulted in the width of the causeway to shrink to about 14 feet, making it difficult to drive on, especially during busy times. The city has previously made some repairs, but more are needed.

A lot was discussed at the recent special meeting of the New Richland City Council Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Originally scheduled as a workforce meeting, the first items on the agenda were the cause for the name of the meeting to be changed.
During the previous week’s council meeting, Chris Schlaak proposed that the City cover former ambulance worker Monica Schutrop’s EMT refresher course. The idea was quickly shot down.
“I don’t think it’s going to take much discussion because she isn’t a city employee anymore,” stated Mayor Gail Schmidt. “It wouldn’t set a good precedent. What would stop other former city workers from coming forward with similar requests?”
